Positive: 13 out of Mixed: 19 out of Negative: 0 out of Player 2. Mafia 2: Definitive Edition is the best way to play one of the most enthralling stories of the past decade. All this publication's reviews Read full review.

Mafia II Definitive Edition is still the excellent game that was on day one, with an open world not so open and a mature story. The first thing that's immediately clear with this remaster is that 2K Games has made some significant changes to Mafia II's lighting and colour grading.

Every scene of the game now has appropriate levels of contrast, and the game looks a lot less washed out as a result. Shadows appear darker, textures are crisper and the game's use of HBAO makes the game feel more at home on modern hardware.

Shadow resolutions have also increased, making the game shadows appear less pixelated in a lot of areas. Changes to the game's textures go a lot deeper than just adding sharper versions of the game's existing textures. This makes the game's world feel a lot more active, especially within the game's earlier Winter scenes. When looking at the scene below, we can see how the game's use of more vibrant colours, higher resolution textures and altered colouring can impact Mafia II's cutscenes.

Backgrounds are more detailed, facial features are more heavily impacted by shadows and lighting and overall the game looks a lot better in motion.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition

That said, character models and animations are the same, so while the game looks a lot better than it did, it doesn't look anything like a modern AAA release. Some of the best changes to Mafia II's visuals can be seen during nighttime scenes, where the game becomes suitably darker and the game's updated lighting and shadows and be seen at the best. At night, Mafia II now looks a lot more atmospheric than before, and the game looks a lot better because of it. Again, we can see that Mafia II's visuals are now a lot less washed out than they were previously, with the game's updated lighting and textures doing a great job to make the scene a lot more grounded and realistic.

On PC, there has never been a better time to replay Mafia II, though we would have liked to have seen draw distances pushed further out in outdoor scenes, as this would have made high-speed driving within the game a lot easier.

While the game was a lot more demanding than expected, we were impressed by the graphical uplift that this version of Mafia II offered. It is worth remembering that this game was designed for an entirely different generation of PC and console hardware, even so, we would have liked to have seen this game run better on modern PC hardware.Home Discussions Workshop Market Broadcasts.

Well, with texture mods and others the now "classic" Mafia 2 was much decent. For the "definitive" edition first video I can see very low textures in the Joe body Maybe that's from a prerendered video, I don't know. Any official list of changes between the old one? I have to check if GOG gives the Mafia 1 and 3 "new versions" after ahving the old version s there. Last edited by lastbreath ; 23 May, pm. Deathstruck View Profile View Posts. More recently ina third entry in the series was released, with all three games so far coming from different developers. As the third game was the only one on current generation consoles, 2K decided to release the three again as Mafia: Trilogy, which not only includes the upcoming remake of the first game, but also the remastered Mafia II: Definitive Edition. While the first Mafia game was set in the s, Mafia II moves ahead to the s in a new fictional setting known as Empire Bay with a completely different cast of characters.

You play as recently discharged from the US Army Vito Scaletta, who returns to Empire Bay after two years and has to find a way to make ends meet and pay off a debt that his deceased father left his family responsible for. You are very quickly introduced to a close friend named Joe Barbaro and a number of other associates that introduces Vito to the mobster lifestyle and the many trials and tribulations that come with it over the next few years or so. Even though Grand Theft Auto V came at the end of the last generation of consoles, you should not be expecting a map anywhere near that size in Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

The design of the city itself is pretty typical, but fits the era that the game is set quite well. Being the Definitive Edition of the game, Mafia II looks better than ever this time around thanks to polished textures and really just about everything about the visual style. While the environments look much more like what you would expect from this generation of games, the character models still feel a little left behind due to their stilted movement and overall last generation look.

There are definitely some improvements in this area, but there is still a pretty large gap between the second and third entries in this department. On top of that, there are some problems with loading of textures on time as well, at least in the console version. Unlike many other similar series though, there are really no side missions along the way to take on besides the basic robbing of places and playing keep away from the cops. As a result, this makes the game feel very linear most of the time, even with the decent sized city of Empire Bay surrounding you.

The good news here though is that you also have access to all of the DLC that released for the game in the past, which includes some additional story missions as well. The gameplay in these story missions usually consists of two different parts, the drive to and from a location in a car and then some sort of other on foot segment that leads to gunfights. Driving in Mafia II: Definitive Edition is pretty much as you would expect from this style of game, with the controls feeling a bit dated times, but still working well enough to get you from place to place.

The game has its fair share of different vehicles to choose from that you can then take to body shops to change as a way to hide from the cops or just fix up for aesthetic reasons.

Driving around is also enhanced with the inclusion of three radio stations that play classic songs from the era, which helps to add to the authentic experience for the time period it is set.

This is a pretty neat feature that sets it apart from other series that would not allow you to do this. You can really rack up the stars and wanted level in the game though, which has cops following you like crazy everywhere around the town.

Besides the driving, the on foot segments in the game typically end up with you having to face some sort of enemies in a gunfight, whether that may be rival gangsters or the police. In Mafia II, you have three weapon slots that you can select with the D-Pad, with the fourth direction being your bare fists for melee combat.

Gun gameplay is pretty standard fare in the game as well, where you can hide behind cover and then peek out to shoot from a third-person perspective. The game also utilizes some stealth segments as well that allows you to sneak up behind enemies and take them out silently. As the original Mafia II was a good game, those elements manage to carry over pretty well for the most part, albeit feeling a bit dated at times. Where the issues really start to arise though are the numerous different bugs and glitches that plague Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

The aforementioned stealth segments are one area where we ran into more than one glitch, when Vito would try and grab the enemy and seem to completely miss.Related: Mafia 4: Will it Happen? While the main selling point, a graphic update to many main characters, came across well, the game was plagued by a low frame rate that slowed down to just 25 frames per second or slower. In just the first few hours of gameplay, console players cited chugging frames that would slow down or even stop, to the point of having to restart the game in the middle of a car chase.

There were also bugs in both Mafia 2 's physics and AI characters. Enemies fall at awkward angles and texture pop-ins happen all too often. In one particular mission, a friendly AI soldier would get stuck running into a wall and the game wouldn't progress until the player was able to nudge his comrade off the wall and back along the correct path.

On top of the unfixed errors and poor performance, there was no added content or changed mechanics. Sure, the 'gunplay from behind cover' mechanics were cutting-edge a decade ago, but there has been a decade of improvement since the release of the original game, none of which was coded into this remastered version.

Development began insoon after the release of the first Mafia game. At release, Mafia II received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise particularly directed at the story, though the restrictive world design was criticized. Its successor, Mafia IIIwas released in To coincide with the remake of the entry, a remastered version of the game, entitled Mafia II: Definitive Editiondeveloped by d3t Ltdwas released by 2K Games on 19 May ; it received generally poor reviews due to numerous glitches, many of which were not present in the original version of the game.

For example, during the early chapters in winter, vehicles are more likely to slip on the road due to the ice. Many firearms from the previous game return, such as the Thompson submachine gun and Coltas well as a pump-action shotgun. Interacting with objects in the environment involves two action buttons: a standard action and a "violent" action for example, when stealing a car, the player may choose to either pick its lock or break the window glassused in context-sensitive situations.

A map is included as in the original Mafia game, but the checkpoint system has been completely overhauled. This feature provides tactical support against enemies and has become a crucial technique of the genre. The game's cutscenes are created by the game engine in real-time. For example, if the player is riding in a car and a cutscene starts, the player will be driving the same car with the same condition damaged or intact and will be wearing the same clothes.

The game features three different in-game radio stations Empire Central Radio, Empire Classic Radio and Delta Radio with licensed music, news, and commercials. Set nearly a decade after the first game, Mafia II takes place between two distinct time periods — the mids, and the early s — within the fictional U. The city is situated on the United States' eastern coastline and divided by a river, and consists of several districts, including wealthy suburbs, slums and tenement blocks for the city's different immigrant races, including Irish, African-American, Chinese, and Italian, and large-scale industrial complexes, with the city supported by a large port, a railroad station, a major prison outside its city limits, several parks, and a collection of shopping malls and supermarkets.

The game's main story sees the city divided between a number of criminal outfits, including three mafia families—the Falcone family, Vinci family, and Clemente family—a Chinese Triad outfit, the Irish Moband several street gangs. The city's design, including the architectural styles, cultures, public transportation and landmarks, are influenced by real-life American cities, including New YorkChicagoLos AngelesSan FranciscoBoston and Detroitfrom within the two respective time periods used in the game.

Two of the game's DLC packs, The Betrayal of Jimmy and Jimmy's Vendettaalso take place in the early s, but in a different canonas the setting features mostly new gangs and characters. The third DLC, Joe's Adventuresis set during the events of the main storyline and bridges the gap between the two time periods. InSicilian immigrant Vito Scaletta is arrested during a robbery and opts to join the United States Army to avoid jail, enlisting as a jeep driver in the th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

In earlyVito returns home on leave to Empire Bay and reunites with his childhood friend Joe Barbaro, who has joined the Clemente crime family in his absence, and supplies Vito with counterfeit discharge papers. Learning that his late father left the family in debt to a loan sharkVito seeks work with his father's former employer Derek Pappalardo, who has ties with the Mafia and recommends him to Henry Tomasino, a Clemente made manafter learning of Vito's connections with Joe.

After carrying out several jobs alongside Joe and Henry, Vito secures enough money to pay off his father's debt but is arrested for the theft and sale of ration stamps and sentenced to ten years in prison.
